♥ Could you tell Peonies & Pearls a little bit about Cutture? How did you get into designing wedding invites? Who’s behind Cutture?
It’s a long story! Cutture was officially established in 2009 by husband and wife team, Dominic and Helen Sharland. We have run a design practice, Hidden Design Studio, for 8 years now, specialising in Interior Architecture and Graphic Design. Cutture was created from a combination of Hidden Design Studio and Hidden Modelshop, an architectural modelmaking company we had until this year. We purchased a laser cutter a few years ago for the model making initially, we then started playing with it for our graphic design work and some pretty beautiful results were created. Having realised we were onto something, and with it marrying so well with our graphic design and retail/exhibition experience we decided to take the risk and open another company, ‘Cutture’ was born!
We work with our small team in our studio on the Wandsworth Bridge Road which has just been transformed into a boutique for all design consultations and a space to display our work as well as sell our products and all things laser cut for the event industry.
♥ How long does it typically take to design and produce a bespoke wedding invite? Do you have in-house graphic designers that are able to offer consultations?
The process begins with a design consultation with any one of us who are all designers (and often all end up working on all the job’s at some point!) We take time to hear exactly what the bride and groom are looking for, some people have very clear ideas, others have no idea where to begin. We encourage people to let us create bespoke graphics for them, at the end of the day you hire designers to create something special and un-achievable at home. So we often begin this by asking people to send us images which highlight important times, places, pets (!) etc in their lives together, which we then transform into an illustration, this is then a graphic all about the couple which is then laser cut from their chosen card stock and a truly personal invitation and, in turn, set of stationery can be created. This is usually our most popular method as people are often astounded by the intricacy of the laser cutting and how it creates a piece that is so recognisable as ‘them’.
We ask for 2 weeks from the sign off of the final design for the invitations to be cut, we then work to the bride and groom’s deadlines for all of the ‘on the day’ stationery.
♥ Are you able to offer different colours of card and envelopes? Do you offer the option for separate rsvp cards, order of service booklets etc?
With regards to RSVP’s, card colours etc, you can have anything you like, we use card from top paper mills, printing from well sourced printers, and all design and laser cutting is done in house as well as digital printing. We often create little booklets for information/directions and rsvp cards which slot into the invite making it nice and neat and therefore still well designed for the ‘particulars’!
We also offer acrylic stationery, we have some standard ranges where we have collaborated with ‘Cleartouch acrylic designs’ and we can also combine acrylic stationery with card stationery such as mirrored table plans, which are always popular.
♥ What prices do your bespoke invites typically start from?
We price our products individually, the price depends on the complexity of the design and therefore how long it takes on the laser cutter as well as the usual printing and material costs.
A bespoke graphic fee starts from £75.00, (bearing in mind this is then used throughout the whole stationery) we then either work to a budget for the bride and groom or we simply price each design we create for them individually so they can then choose. Typically, invitation prices begin from £7.00 per invite.
If customers mention Peonies & Pearls we will offer the bespoke fee at a reduced rate of £65.00!
♥ Will you be attending any events in the next few months, where Peonies & Pearls readers can see your invites in the flesh?
We are going to be at The Deco Affair on Thursday 14th October
On 20th/21st October we will be exhibiting at the Saatchi Gallery for London Launch LIVE for the event industry and in January will be at Top Drawer.
We make a sneak appearance to the Designer Wedding Show via By Appoinment Only Design this weekend, and in February we are hoping to be there again in our own right.
